The island has a population of around 1000 but a new church had to built in the 1900s as the island's population increased when British soldiers were stationed on the island and the church was too small to accommodate all the new arrivals. Today the island has more than 4 churches, and just a handful of shops so everything has to be brought in by plane or ship.
